Installing 'The Sum of Our Parts' for Synthesis Show

Yesterday was my turn to install my paintings for the Synthesis Show. It is always a bit of a gamble when I am painting with a specific venue/theme in mind as to whether it will come off. I filled my studio with microscopic slides, which although I am not using in the show, have definitely informed my work. The colours in the paintings have been influenced by them and the drab bricks of industrial Manchester! I really felt happier installing work in such a 'real' venue as opposed to a sterile white walled gallery. Think my paintings respond much better, and under low light too. Very inspiring day. The sum of my parts is obviously the industrial atmospheric look!!
P.S. The space is for my girl who isn't dry yet!

We open the show a week today. All are welcome to the preview night

The Haven of the Studio

I love artists studios, and mine is my haven. Each time I open the door I am greeted by the stares of my girls, my creations. Sometimes those stares feel accusatory if I haven't been there for a while. I sit in my chair with a brew and just look at the the last lot of work before starting afresh. My studio is in an old mill, it is deadly silent which is eerie as I often think of how noisy it would have been in its heyday. I think about the women workers, half deaf, fingers shredded, working in harsh conditions, lungs shriveled from cotton dust and raise my brew to them. I am blessed.
